HEPA is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air. It is
is actually a military standard. Also known as "milspec." If you are dying to know all the technical details you can take a trip over to the Department of Energy's website [ http://www.eh.doe.gov/techstds/standard/std3020/std3020.pdf ] In much simpler terms, HEPA filters can remove very small particles from the air -- all the way to .3 microns in size.
"HEPA Type" or "HEPA Like" This means almost HEPA -- but it didn't quite make it. It didn't live up to the standards and shouldn't be confused with true HEPA. If you want a real HEPA filter, avoid anything with any uncertain words following HEPA.
ULPA means
Ultra High Efficiency Air. Chances are you aren't going to even need to worry about this one. ULPA is meant for filtering biological pollutants such as biohazards. If you need this in your home you probably shouldn't be living there. 99% of the time a HEPA filter will be all you need in these circumstances
